Next Friday is a designated Indigenous Professional Learning Day for all schools.

Maatoomsii’Pookaiks | Children First

  • Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day
  • Friday, April 24, 2026
  • Oki, Dādánast’áda, Âba wathtec, Tânisi, Taanishi, Bonjour, Hello.

April 24 is Maatoomsii'Pookaiks | Children First, the CBE system-wide Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day. This year marks a significant milestone as we honour the 10-year commemoration of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action.

Our Story

This day of professional learning began in October 2021 and is designed for all staff to develop and apply foundational knowledge of Indigenous Education in the CBE, regardless of role. We are committed to acknowledging and responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action, which includes providing education on the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Indigenous rights, Indigenous law, and Indigenous-Crown relations (TRC Call to Action #57).

On Sept. 1, 2022, Piikani Elder Leonard Bastien gifted our day of learning with the Blackfoot name Maatoomsii'Pookaiks (MAAH-DOOM-SEE-BOO-GAAKS), which translates to putting children first. This name upholds and sustains the CBE mission: Students come first, and we are grateful to Elder Leonard for this beautiful gift.

Part of the professional learning day is planned for the whole system and part of the day will be designed by each school.

At The Hamptons School, the focus will be:

Okkakiosatoo – to look carefully, incorporating land based connections and lived experiences.

Staff will:

  • Reflect - on own sense of belonging
  • Deepen - own connection to the land - core source or knowledge
  • Explore - the Indigenous Ways of Knowing and lived experiences - they do not have to be taught
  • Consider - how the professional day learning will transition into the classroom.

Staff will be more knowledgeable in intentionally identifying opportunities across the curriculum to weave in Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing - designing learning tasks that reflect these values and deepen connections for all learners. Staff will share all newly designed learning tasks with one another.
