To the Parents and Guardians of The Hamptons School,
Thank you for continuing to teach your children their purpose:
I come to The Hamptons School to Learn.
Well-Being
The Calgary Board of Education Three Year Education Plan identifies the commitment to student success through Learning Excellence, Truth and Reconciliation, Diversity and Inclusion, and Well-Being.
One example of a Well-Being Action in The Hamptons School Development Plan is a professional learning goal for teachers. A Book Study was initiated with a guide for teachers and a picture book for students.
A Little Spot of Feelings and Emotions Educator's Guide by Diane Alber:
"Social-Emotional Learning refers to the development of self-awareness, self-control, self-regulation, social skills, and responsible decision making, all of which are essential for school and life successes."
Me and My Sit Spot by Lauren Maclean:
"What is a Sit Spot and how does it help nurture our relationship with the land?"
"Developing this nature routine leads to so many possibilities for learning about our land and how we fit into it."
"Did you know that nature talks to us?"
Teachers facilitate Sit Spots with students. The Sit Spot is a special opportunity reserved for quiet and peaceful thinking and reflecting time. All students go outside, on the land, to sit in their spots and reflect with their visual journals. Students are asked to focus on nature with their five senses.
The Sit Spot time is beautiful to observe. As all students settle into each of their places throughout the land, there is a blanket of peacefulness. Students may be leaning against a tree, sitting on a rock, or lying in the grass as they begin to reflect. A very special harmony is created with all 223 students and all staff members together in reflection.
Grade 3 Sit Spot Reflections
- "It's like sitting outside in nature and sketching what we see - it makes me feel calm."
- "It makes me feel relaxed and it's like you are alone in nature because everyone is so quiet."
- "I feel like I have fresh air, and it feels good."
- "I think it is fun to sketch trees and nature, because you are sketching nature and I enjoy sketching."
- "It's a time for you to calm down and listen to nature sounds."
Please ask your children about their Sit Spots. With your children as the teachers, Sit Spots may evolve into special family time.
Late Students
It is very important for all students to be on time for school to help them prepare for their readiness for the day and for their learning. When students arrive late to their classroom, it takes time for them to adjust and prepare. Thank you for ensuring that students are ready to enter the school on the 8:37 AM bell.
Lost and Found
All Lost and Found items are displayed on tables outside the office and students have had an opportunity to view them. Parents are also welcome to drop by the school to help look for lost items - hopefully many of the items will be recognized!
