Message from the Principal

To the Parents and Guardians of The Hamptons School,

Thank you for continuing to teach your children their purpose:

"I come to The Hamptons School to learn."

For the Love of Literacy

Good readers actively engage with a text rather than simply looking at words on a page.

According to literacy and reading comprehension frameworks, there are seven core habits of a good reader:

  1. Activating Prior Knowledge (Schema): Connecting what you are reading to your own life experiences, the real world, or other books and articles you have read. These connections can be text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world.
  2. Visualizing: Creating mental images of settings, characters, or concepts using your senses as you read.
  3. Questioning: Asking questions before, during, and after reading, such as who, what, when, where, why, and how, to build curiosity and check for understanding.
  4. Inferring: Reading between the lines by combining clues from the text with your background knowledge to understand meanings that are not directly stated.
  5. Monitoring and Clarifying: Paying attention to your comprehension while reading, recognizing when something is confusing, and slowing down or rereading to improve understanding.
  6. Determining Importance: Identifying main ideas, key arguments, or essential plot points while recognizing which details are less important.
  7. Synthesizing: Combining these strategies to develop a new, big-picture understanding of the text after reading.

These seven core habits can help parents ask meaningful questions and guide their children through the reading process.

Thank you, parents, for reading with your children!
